Drugs blamed for infertility

Lucy Ward, The Guardian, 5th September 2005

Three in 10 would-be parents admit taking recreational drugs during the time they are trying to conceive, according to a report claiming the majority of British couples are not fit for pregnancy.

A survey of 2,000 women in England and Scotland found two thirds drank alcohol over the period they were hoping to get pregnant, while four out of 10 smoke and four in 10 are overweight.

The findings of the poll, conducted by Pregnancy & Birth magazine, suggests that fertility problems among British couples could increase over the next decade, according to the authors.

One in seven couples in the UK has fertility problems caused by a combination of factors, including delaying motherhood, an increase in sexually transmitted diseases, a huge rise in obesity - which can affect ovulation - and a possible decline in male fertility. Of those couples (27% of women and 31% of men) who said they continued to take recreational drugs while trying for a baby, 90% said they used cannabis, while 36% used ecstasy and 34% cocaine.
