Researchers look for cannabis volunteers

The Wood & Vale Express, 9th September 2005

Researchers at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital are looking for volunteers to test cannabis.

Scientists have teamed up with Imperial College London, which has a base at St Mary's in Paddington, to look into whether the active ingredient of cannabis can be used to help people who have trouble breathing.

Cannabinoids are believed to relieve the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Dr Elspeth Pickering said: "Breathlessness can have a major impact on the quality of life for patients with respiratory diseases, and by using a cannabinoid, we hope to find a way to block the mechanism which causes it."

Researchers are looking for healthy people aged between 50 and 70 to help test the drugs. Call 020-8846 1234 ext. 7055.
